Tools and Calculators
IMPORTANT
The loan calculators below are for historical reference. We are leaving them online for now but we will likely stop regularly updating them.
There have been many recent changes to federal student loans and many features of these calculators are no longer necessary or helpful.
There are now many other free and commercial resources for student loan help which have come out in the ten years since we started this free, not-for-profit site. We will likely take these off line soon.
Simple SAVE/PAYE/IBR Payment Calculator -- Also calculates your PAYE/IBR maximum payment AND the income needed to reach it. This is necessary to know whether you have the "partial financial hardship" needed to enter PAYE/IBR.
SAVE / PAYE PSLF Optimizer -- Enter your loan info and estimates of current and future income for you (and/or spouse) to evaluate which plan is best for PSLF.
Federal vs Private Loan Refinance Calculator -- The only calculator we know of specifically designed to compare federal loans to private loans.
PSLF Payment Tracker -- Downloadable Excel spreadsheet to keep track of eligible payments and other data. You'll absolutely need a "from-day-one" record if your PSLF-eligible loan payments are miscounted by your servicer. Unfortunately, it happens often. Each undercounted payment can cost you thousands in lost forgiveness.
Weighted Average Interest Rate Calculator -- When consolidating, your existing loans will be collapsed into one loan (or two if a mix of subsidized and unsubsidized loans). Use this to find your new rate.
Withholding Calculator -- Calculate your IRS withholding in advance based on how you fill out your W-4.
